President Barack Obama has backed India’s ambition for permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council. In a speech to the Indian parliament in Delhi, he said he would “look forward to a reformed UN Security Council that includes India as a permanent member”.
India has been lobbying for a seat at the UN’s top table for years. Earlier, Mr Obama said the Washington-Delhi relationship would be one of this century’s defining partnerships.
Analysts say the remarks do not mean India will take a seat on the Security Council immediately; the unspecified reforms Mr Obama mentioned could take years. But the gesture nevertheless highlights the importance the US places on its ties with the nation of 1.2 billion people.
